Incontinence & Women's Health

Urinary Incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine from your bladder. It can occur for a variety of reasons. The most common types of incontinence are stress incontinence- leaking with physical exertion (cough, sneeze, exercise etc). Urge Incontinence- a sudden and strong urge to pass urine, even if your bladder isn't full. You often need to pass urine more frequently than usual. Overflow Incontinence- Urine leaks out from an already full bladder and the bladder does not empty completely.

Incontinence can affect both men and women, however women tend to be more susceptible after childbirth. One in three women who have ever had a baby will develop a form of incontinence. The good news is incontinence can be cured!!!!! The initial treatment lies in your pelvic floor. Strengthening these muscles which support your bladder and bowel improves your bladder control and can therefore decrease or stop the amount of leakage. Your physiotherapist can help you learn how to do these exercises properly and set you up on a training program.
