Maria Mead

Maria was born in Hornsby, Sydney, NSW, went to both primary and high
school in Hornsby, Sydney, NSW, went to church in Hornsby, Sydney, NSW
and had all her relatives live within a 10 minute drive of Hornsby,
Sydney, NSW. Needless to say, really, but she thought that Hornsby,
Sydney, NSW was the centre of the universe…..until she was accepted to
study physiotherapy at LIDCOMBE, Sydney, NSW !!! Talk about a shock – it
used to take 2 hours each way every day to get to and from Uni – really
bad for 8am lecture starts, and 8pm tutorial finishes!!!
Also happening about the same time as the “Hornsby is not the centre of
the universe culture shock”, she met a wonderful music teacher, who grew
up in Orange, NSW. Maria had never been west of the Blue Mountains, and
was a real city girl such that she expected Orange to be a dirt road
with a pub and a general store!! Talk about naïve !!
After finishing studying Physiotherapy in 1992, Maria moved to Tamworth
to be with her new husband, Rick, and can nearly be called a local,
having lived in Tamworth for the last 15 years. She now really loves the
country life, and couldn’t understand why you would want to be in an
overcrowded city!! She has worked in both the local public and private
hospitals, as well as in private practice.
Since starting a family in 1995, Maria has worked part time, which
enables her to spend more time with Rick and the kids. Her main area of
interest is in women’s health, pregnancy, childbirth and pelvic floor
rehabilitation, and this makes up the bulk of her workload at
Proactive……although she does see and treat other conditions, just like
any other country physio!
